CESL is offering a TOEFL Preparation course including techniques and strategies for both iBT and pBT exams. Our next session is June 17-July 25. CESL student cost $200.00; non CESL students $250. Apply Now The next CESL Institutional TOEFL will be July 26, 2008. CESL administers the Institutional TOEFL three times a year in November, April and July, before the beginning of the academic semesters at the University. This TOEFL is given only to CESL students. The UA Graduate and Undergraduate Admissions office may request that a student with admission pending take the Institutional TOEFL. Students should request a letter from the appropriate Admissions office. This score is valid only for UA admission. |

English Proficiency Requirements. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for every F-1 or J-1 international student who intends to study at the University of Arizona.
If you are a graduate student, check with your department for departmental admission requirements including TOEFL, GRE and GMAT scores, deadlines, and admission dates. CESL Endoresement If you have applied to the UA, and you have a borderline TOEFL score, you may request a CESL endorsement. To be eligible to apply for the endorsement, you must be enrolled full-time for at least one 8-week session at CESL. Endorsement CESL Transcript. If you are applying to another university or college, you may Request a Transcript. This report includes your final grades at CESL and your highest TOEFL on record at CESL; it does not include any recommendation. |

What is the best way to prepare for the TOEFL? The TOEFL test is a measurement of English ability, and many universities in the United States require a certain score on the TOEFL for admission. To achieve a higher score on the TOEFL, students must improve their English language skills. The CESL intensive English program helps students improve all their English language skills for the TOEFL. The best way to get a higher score on the TOEFL is to increase your English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. There are many opportunities to improve your skills at CESL. Level 10-30 At these beginning levels, your teachers will guide you in the most efficient way to improve your English skills and ultimately, your TOEFL score. In addition to your class work, you should read, write, listen to, and speak English as much as possible. Level 40-50 In addition to the above, at this level, it is a good idea to work on integrating your skills. For example, listen to the news and take notes. Read a short novel and write a critique of it. Participate in discussion groups and get a conversation partner. Read and discuss academic subjects. Doing well in your Listening, Speaking, Reading , Writing, and Grammar classes is the best way to quickly improve your TOEFL score. Pay attention to your teacher's comments about your grammatical errors and focus on eliminating them. Level 60-70 At these levels, your Basic English skills have developed to create a good foundation in English. At this point, in addition to increasing your reading level and speed, you can listen to longer lectures on academic topics, take notes, summarize and synthesize information. It may also be a good idea to take a course in Test Taking Skills. This course will not necessarily improve your English, but it could decrease test anxiety and teach you some techniques at taking tests efficiently. It would also be a good idea to focus on your weakest skill by taking an elective class that will give you more practice on that skill. Individual Practice CESL students can use CESL Lab TOEFL materials or on-line TOEFL practice. Students can check out a TOEFL Preparation CD to use at any time in the CESL lab. Students can take a pre-test and discover the skills they need to work on. Then they can do exercises on those specific skills. A lab monitor will help you get started.
