Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona is threefold:

1. To provide superior English language instruction to native speakers of other languages through a curriculum that provides a rich and productive learning environment to prepare students for academic and professional success at the University of Arizona as well as for other academic, professional, and social settings.

2. To serve the linguistic and professional development needs of the University of Arizona and the greater global community by participating in professional and local communities, supporting research in language learning, networking with ESL professionals, and mentoring teachers.

3. To encourage respect for cultural and linguistic diversity through sensitivity, professionalism, and collaboration both on and off campus in an effort to promote worldwide cultural understanding.

All programs at the Center for English as a Second Language meet high standards of excellence, as CESL has been fully accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. We invite you to learn more about our high-quality programs, which include:

CESL students may be admitted to the University upon completion of CESL, and with CESL's endorsement in place of the required TOEFL score. Students must apply directly to the University Undergraduate Admissions Office or the Graduate College for conditional admission.
