Roommate Matching Apartments These furnished apartments are near the university, within walking distance, easy bike ride, and on a city bus direct route to the university. There are 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartments with living area and full kitchen. Each student signs a separate contract for himself only. Each student has his/her own bedroom and may have his own bathroom but will share the bathroom with no more than one other person. The two complexes linked below will sign short-term leases for CESL students; move-in costs are minimized and in most cases utilities are already in service. This is the easiest, quickest, and most reasonable option for CESL students when they first arrive. The cost is moderate - usually about $400 a month. We suggest that students who plan to study at CESL only 2 or 4 months should consider roommate-matching options. Also, students who plan to stay in Tucson longer can stay in the roommate-matching apartments for a short time until they have a chance to see other apartments and make friends who might want to share an apartment. We can usually move students into these apartments on the same or next day after arrival. Sahara Apartments offers short term leases to CESL students. It is an option if you do not want roommates. |

HomestayCESL Alumni: Please tell CESL about your homestay experience. Complete this survey. THANK YOU! An alternative to residence halls and apartments is to live with a Tucson family in a Homestay Program. Remember, there is no typical U.S. family. Some families are single parents with children, older couples whose children are grown, or couples with small or no children. Some families may have pets, and you must understand and follow the family rules. Homestay rates include two meals a day: breakfast and dinner. Students normally have their own bedroom and study space. Transportation to school and home may be by bus. It is important to discuss transportation to the university when you apply for a placement. Renting an Apartment for yourself Students should expect to pay about $600.00-$1000.00 a month to rent an apartment. To live alone in a studio or one-bedroom apartment, plan on about $800 plus utilities. Monthly rent varies depending on the length of the lease; the number of students sharing the apartment; whether the apartment has one or more bedrooms or if it has furniture, and whether the rent includes utilities. Available apartments within walking distance of the campus are limited, and availability of transportation is an important consideration. If students do not have cars or do not plan to ride a bicycle, they must look for apartments on direct bus routes.The University of Arizona, Office of Off-campus Housing has a web site with information about available apartments, finding an apartment, or finding a roommate. Move-In Costs. Owners of rental property often require advance payment of two months' rent to cover the first and last months' rent. Many owners also require a cleaning deposit which is refunded only if the premises are clean and undamaged when the tenant leaves. To move into an apartment might cost $1,000-$1,500 in addition to the installation of utilities which may be about $300. Lease. Rental contracts are in writing. Before signing the rental agreement, called a lease, students should be sure they understand it completely. Many apartment owners require a 6, 9 or 12 month lease. Utilities. Before signing a lease, tenants must clearly understand which utilities the owner will pay and which the tenant must pay. Water and garbage often are included in the rent. Gas and electricity often are not included in the rent and must be paid by the tenant each month. Before moving in, the tenant must arrange with the utility company to turn on the gas and or the electricity. There is an installation fee for this service. Telephone is always paid by the tenant and can usually be installed within a few hours after the deposit and installation charge is paid.
